Is a float-type steam trap better or is an inverted bucket type better? The water flow rate is quite high!
The respective features of these two steam traps are as follows; you should decide which one is better based on the actual circumstances. Free-floating ball type steam trap: It features a simple structure, high sensitivity, the ability to drain water continuously, and low steam leakage. They are divided into two types: those with automatic exhaust function and those without it. When the latter is chosen, an additional thermostatic exhaust valve must be used or a manual vent valve must be installed. The maximum operating pressure is 9.0 MPa (gauge); it can tolerate a high backpressure of up to 80%. It has poor resistance to water hammer and fouling, and its response is slow, though it is regular in operation and offers stable and reliable performance. Inverted bucket (bell float) type steam trap: It discharges condensate intermittently, with a steam leakage rate of 2%-3%; it is capable of venting air, and its rated operating pressure range is below 1.6 MPa (gauge). Its operating conditions can adapt automatically. A backpressure of 80% is allowed, but the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet must not be less than 0.05 MPa. Slower speed, but regular in operation; stable and reliable performance. The working pressure must be appropriate to the volume and weight of the float. The valve structure is complex, and the valve seat and pin tips are prone to wear; it should be filled with water before use.
We generally use free-floating ball type steam traps, and they work quite well.
For freely floating balls, they work well for low flow rates. High precision is difficult to achieve, so it is generally not used.
