One year after graduation, I had spent half a year in the southern lands; before I knew it, my knowledge had grown extensive. People are accustomed to the clouds and mist in the mountains, while those who long for beauty in the rivers and moonlight consider it a luxury. Zheng Xia’s paintings depict endless sorrow; Guo Tai’s stele is worthy and free from concealment. A small boat sails into the waves, amid the gentle rain that falls at an angle. Note: Zheng Xia once depicted the ongoing disasters of people being displaced and suffering, and presented these illustrations to his superiors. When Cai Yong and Guo Tai inscribed the epitaph, they said that Guo Tai’s virtues during his lifetime were indeed as described in the inscription. This line in the poem conveys the idea that although one may be poor, one’s aspirations should not be diminished, encouraging everyone to maintain integrity. (Present Rhyme)
