Expert advice: I’m dealing with a reactor whose operating temperature is 440 degrees, and the pressure is 1.93 MPa. The medium contains gasoline, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, and trace amounts of H2S; there is also sulfur present in concentrations of 20–50 ppm, with peak levels of 200–300 ppm. What material should be used for this application? ? ?
16MnR (HIC) steel is selected.

I remember there was a Nelson curve for selecting materials
Does this situation fall under wet hydrogen sulfide corrosion? Isn’t that Nelson curve used for hydrogen corrosion environments? Can 15CrMoR be used? Normalized plate, post-weld stress-relief heat treatment.
It’s hard to say what to choose; not only heat treatment needs to be considered, but also the material’s high-temperature tensile properties.
For large quantities, using 16MnR (HIC) steel is an option; it’s feasible. However, for small quantities, the material is not in stock, and it’s difficult to arrange delivery via futures. 15CrMoR: normalizing followed by tempering is acceptable. It depends on the specific design requirements – whether high corrosion resistance or hydrogen resistance is more appropriate.
It is better to use Cr-Mo steel for surfacing stainless steel composites; given the complex nature of the media, hydrogen corrosion at high temperatures must be taken into account, as well as corrosion caused by other types of media.
Consult the Nelson curve for HG20581-1998, and take post-weld stress-relief heat treatment into consideration.
1# keith.yang.cn We have several reactors that have similar operating conditions to yours; they are made of 0Cr18Ni10Ti material and have been in use for 5 years now with no issues.
