Ask about the properties of matte?

Do you all know what properties matte copper has? I’m facing a technical issue now. During the smelting of matte, the company’s experienced workers use spoons to take some of the matte that is being smelted and pour it on the ground. If the matte cools down to form a porous solid with bubbles, the workers tell me that the slag-forming stage of matte smelting is about to end, and they ask me to remove the slag. After it’s removed, they say that the stage of copper production through smelting has begun. I just don’t understand why, when matte copper cools down to a solid state, it becomes a porous solid with bubbles inside. I figured it might be the oxygen dissolved in it that has come out; I wonder if some expert can explain this to me.
The formation of a loose solid with bubbles in its center indicates that Cu2S inside the furnace has begun to react, accompanied by the release of SO2 gas.
