Recently, when working on a special report on safety facility design, it was found that in areas where chlorine is used (note: with no other flammable or explosive substances present), explosion-proof electrical equipment is used in the electrical design. In my opinion, its electrical properties should be determined based on the corrosive environment. I wonder if it’s reasonable? If explosion protection is required, where is the basis for that? Both chlorine and oxygen are oxidizing gases that aid combustion, as well as strong oxidants. According to relevant regulations, the electrical systems in oxygen-rich areas are classified as those in fire-prone areas only, and not as those in explosion-hazardous areas. The reason is simple: explosions are far more dangerous than corrosion. Safety first; explosion prevention must be considered first and foremost. There are also other standards for corrosion.
