The shaft material of Shimizu centrifugal pumps is usually made from materials with good mechanical properties. Common materials include: “Carbon steel: This type of material is less sensitive to stress concentration and is relatively inexpensive; it is the most widely used material for shaft components.” Common grades include: 30, 35, 40, 45, 50. When high-quality carbon steel is used, heat treatment is generally required to improve its properties. For shafts that are subjected to less stress or for which stress is not significant, ordinary carbon steels such as Q235 and Q255 can also be used. For shafts required for applications such as heavy loading, high temperatures, small structural dimensions, and light weight, alloy steels can be selected. Alloy steel possesses better mechanical and heat treatment properties, but it is more sensitive to stress concentration and is also more expensive. In the design, special attention should be paid to reducing stress concentration structurally and improving its surface quality. If corrosion resistance is also required, stainless steels such as 304 and 316 can be used.
