As for what the original poster mentioned about using steam for preheating before starting up, it is because some catalysts require a certain activation process; in other words, they need a specific amount of activation energy in order to function as catalysts. However, the temperature cannot be too high, otherwise it may cause the active components of the catalyst to sinter or fall off, resulting in deactivation.
