How can a mixture of sodium acetate and sodium lactate be separated and purified?
It’s really not easy! Membrane separation: nanofiltration doesn’t work, reverse osmosis doesn’t work, electrodialysis doesn’t work, dialysis doesn’t work. Ion exchange? I need to check the literature on evaporation-crystallization: it’s possible, but it depends on the phase diagram. The pKa of acetic acid is 4.76, while that of lactic acid is 3.08. Therefore, two techniques can be tried: 1. Add lactic acid to the solution to adjust the pH to around 3.08; in this way, over 95% of the acetic acid exists in molecular form. Electrodialysis can then be used to obtain a relatively pure sodium lactate solution. The remaining lactic acid and acetic acid solution can be processed using a distillation column – high-concentration lactic acid can be recovered for reuse from the bottom of the column, while acetic acid plus water is obtained from the top. I wonder if the separation goal has been achieved? 2. Lactic acid is added to the solution to adjust the pH to around 2.5; as a result, over 99% of the acetic acid exists in molecular form. The acetic acid aqueous solution can be obtained by evaporation, while the remaining lactic acid and sodium lactate solution can be used in a vacuum distillation column – high-concentration sodium lactate is obtained at the bottom of the column, and lactic acid is obtained at the top. I wonder if the separation goal has been achieved?
