In what situations are vertical U-tube heat exchangers generally used? Under what circumstances should one consider using vertical U-tube heat exchangers?

I’ve only designed it too. I really haven’t thought about under what circumstances to use this.
We have encountered such heat exchangers; this should be a matter for consideration by the process engineering team. I wonder if factors such as the medium, temperature difference, heat transfer, and site conditions have been taken into account.
Here, it’s often because of space constraints
If possible, a horizontal configuration is also preferable; vertical U-tube heat exchangers are not widely used. The main reasons for this are: 1. When the inlet and outlet connections on the tube side are located at the bottom, there is no space to remove the tube bundle for maintenance, so it is necessary to move the equipment to another location; 2. When the inlet and outlet connections on the tube side are in use, liquid accumulates inside the U-shaped heat exchange tubes; this liquid cannot be removed when it is present in the tube side, and gas present in the tube side can cause vibrations ; 3. For vertical U-tube heat exchangers, the above two issues are relatively easy to handle; but when the size is large, there may not be enough space for core extraction at the top, requiring relocation for maintenance. But it is a last resort when the installation location is limited.
