Spray drying is widely used in various fields such as food and chemicals, while the drying of sludge is still under exploration in China. Given the paste-like nature of sludge, this approach warrants research into how to address the issues associated with nozzles. Which method do you think offers greater advantages for drying sludge: spray drying or paddle drying?
I’ve heard of spray drying being used to dry sludge for the first time. Spray drying generally requires the material to be dried to have a certain degree of fluidity, and sludge seems not to meet this condition. Spray drying is generally used to dry heat-sensitive materials or those with special requirements regarding dispersion. Is sludge heat-sensitive? Spray drying generally requires high energy consumption; is it worth drying sludge in this way? In my opinion, sludge can be dried using conventional methods; if a powder form is required, the dried material can be mechanically crushed.
In Xiaoshan, Hangzhou, there is already a sludge spray-drying and incineration facility with a capacity of 200 tons per day in operation, and it is said to work well. I went to the site to see it; I don’t know much about chemical engineering, but I noticed that the nozzle was just a pipe with an additional branch
