We are seeking information on the work processes for those in charge of pipeline design in design firms; the details should be provided for different design stages (feasibility study, preliminary design, construction drawings, etc.), or alternatively, for different types of projects (pure design projects, EPC projects, etc.).

I work at a Class A design institute with 200 employees, and I would like to explain the workflow related to the piping discipline (in our institute, piping and process systems are not separated). Preliminary design generally does not require pipeline layout drawings, but equipment layout drawings are required. Therefore, during the preliminary design phase, the person in charge of the piping discipline is mainly responsible for preparing equipment layout diagrams, zone index charts, piping naming tables, piping grade tables, and equipment lists. Design development stage: Submit the initial structural conditions, accept the returned equipment and instrumentation conditions, as well as the conditions provided by the structural engineering team, such as beam and column layout diagrams and reinforcement diagrams. Then, pipeline layout is carried out based on the PID. Pipelines that require stress analysis are analyzed first; if they fail the analysis, changes are made immediately, especially for pipes such as steam main pipes, until they pass the analysis. At a certain stage of pipeline installation, the secondary requirements for the structure need to be met (these can be omitted if everything is made of steel), such as the installation of embedded plates, creation of openings, and provision for pedestals. Once the piping layout is at a certain stage, the site conditions and waterway conditions can be provided to the instrumentation team, along with a diagram showing the locations of the instrumentation points; then discussions can take place with the HVAC team regarding the location of the exhaust ducts. Then the piping goes deeper, and pipe supports are installed, with the piping being adjusted continuously. Send the draft to the proofreader for review, and then make the necessary changes based on their suggestions. Finally, prepare a pipe section table, a comprehensive material table, a pipe rack table, and a spring hanger table. File stored in the database. OVER!
