Hello, dear sea friends. Here’s the specific situation: our facility has a 7,000-cubic-meter internal floating roof storage tank. Originally, the thickness of the mid-web of the bottom plate was 8 mm; now, due to a steel plate in the bottom plate having leaked, there are two square holes with dimensions of 10*10. As a precaution, we measured the thickness of all the base plates later on; the result was that the thickness of the steel plate that was missing was 2.5 mm. The average thickness within a 5m x 5m area surrounding that missing plate was 3.5 mm, while the average thickness in the other areas was around 4 mm. Since this tank has been in use for 10 years, my supervisor now wants me to come up with a solution. I need to determine whether, given the condition of the bottom plate, it would be sufficient to purchase a steel plate and use welding to repair the leaks locally It is still better to replace the entire base plate. Now, the leader has two intentions: one is to replace the entire base plate. One is to perform a local replacement. It’s so annoying; they want me to come up with a plan. As for corrosion of this type of substrate, I haven’t worked on it specifically before, so I don’t have any theoretical foundation for it. I earnestly ask everyone for help, offering suggestions and plans. I earnestly beg.
Can we be sure it’s just a local leak? In that case, for cost-saving reasons, the area to be repaired with steel plates can be made slightly larger. The safest option is to replace the entire panel.
First, measure the thickness of the tank wall, especially the bottom ring plate. The purpose is to predict the service life of the tank. If it can still be used for another ten years, the entire base plate should be replaced; if its lifespan is only a few more years left, then local repairs should be carried out by replacing those parts that are 3.5 mm or thinner.
In my opinion: if the oil tank is in good condition overall and still needs to be in use, it should be replaced entirely! ! ! ! If you don’t want to spend too much money but still need to use it for a while, opt for partial replacement first! ! ! ! The key is to look at the company’s future development and leadership intentions! ! ! !
From a technical perspective, both overall and partial approaches are feasible; the solution is primarily determined from an economic standpoint
Our unit also replaced the bottom plates; all of them were replaced…… Either a complete replacement or partial replacement works in both cases.
