A Brief Discussion on the Changes at SHELL Company

On September 9, 2009, Shell signed contracts with three Chinese companies, authorizing Dongfang Boiler (Group) Co., Ltd., Wuxi Huaguang Boiler Co., Ltd., and Suzhou Hailu Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. to manufacture key equipment for Shell’s gasification technology. These three companies will be responsible for manufacturing the internals of the gasifier and syngas cooler. Shell said it will work with three Chinese companies to ensure the quality of its products. 　　Previously, in May of this year, Shell signed its first licensing agreement; the 711th Research Institute of China National Shipbuilding Corporation became the first manufacturer in China to receive Shell’s certification for key equipment related to gasification technology, and will be responsible for producing the core component of Shell’s gasification technology – coal powder burners. China is already the largest market for Shell’s gasification technology. Of Shell’s 26 gasification technology licensing contracts signed worldwide, the Chinese market accounts for over two-thirds of them (19 contracts). Shell officials said that the use of domestic equipment will help accelerate the project’s commissioning, enabling them to provide more efficient and timely technical services to Chinese customers. The above information clearly shows that after facing criticism from domestic companies and associations regarding the promotion of gasification technology in China, SHELL has quietly changed its attitude, which is a significant shift. However, we believe that these alone are not sufficient; it is necessary to confront the existing problems, work together with domestic application companies to resolve them, and modify inappropriate processes in order to gain recognition in China’s gasification market.
