I recently worked on a project. Since the equipment was completed, only a coat of iron red anti-rust primer was applied. Party A failed to pick up the goods on time, and they were left in an open area for over a month. Then send it to the site for installation. Surface rusting. The owner expressed their opinions on this. So I would like to ask how long the rust-proof primer lasts. Are there any relevant regulatory requirements? I hope the experts here can give me some advice!
Check the contract. . . Additionally, only one coat of primer was applied; it wasn’t originally a complete anti-corrosion system. Moreover, without the protection provided by a topcoat, the primer’s weather resistance and ability to withstand sunlight exposure are poor. . It’s hard to say about the warranty. . .
The warranty period for ordinary anti-rust primers is 12 months, of course, under certain conditions; one of those conditions is protection from sunlight

However, in normal outdoor conditions, alkyd iron red is unlikely to last 12 months; even 10 months may be a risk. If it is an epoxy rust-inhibiting iron red primer, the time required will definitely be much longer; however, the exact duration depends on the substrate and the environment.
These days, many rust prevention treatments are merely for show, intended only to prevent machines from being used without any protection; even when painting, there is still cutting fluid or oil on the surface of the equipment. Take simple conveyor pipes as an example – the lifespan of pipes that have been properly painted can be up to ten times longer than those that haven’t been painted properly. This certainly can’t be attributed to the quality of the material. To be honest, it might be argued that our materials are of poor quality, but even then, the difference shouldn’t be exponential. Effective rust prevention involves using appropriate painting materials and carrying out thorough surface treatment, including applying base coats, intermediate coats, and top coats. For more robust rust protection, several intermediate coats may be applied before the final top coat. It’s essential to follow the painting procedures carefully, paying attention to factors such as coating thickness, painting intervals, external environmental conditions, and curing processes, in order to achieve satisfactory results. The equipment mentioned by the original poster developed rust just one month after being coated with a rust preventive paint – this is even worse than using ordinary rust preventive oils. Better rust preventive oils can ensure that equipment remains free from rust in marine environments for at least three months. In such cases, it’s better not to use such rust preventive paints at all. haha. Just my personal opinion.
The shelf life of paint before use and after use are different concepts. In a situation like yours, it’s almost ready; why not urge the client to pick it up sooner? It’s you who are in the wrong now. And why wasn’t it painted before shipping? At least the appearance should have been taken care of. Actually, the client here doesn’t understand either and doesn’t pay attention to anti-corrosion coating; otherwise, they wouldn’t receive equipment that has rusted.
Party A isn’t unaware of this; everyone is racing against time to meet deadlines. He couldn’t do anything either. The paint used for profiles and sheets is of different quality. So there’s basically no problem with the sheets. The profiles are quite old-fashioned. But in terms of appearance, the profiles are not very noticeable. Moreover, some compensation was made before shipping. So the product still looks decent when it arrives at the site. But after he installs it. It was scratched a bit by the lifting gear. Another scenario is getting wet in the rain and then being exposed to Chongqing’s sun. The situation for profiles, especially some of the steel supports, looks very poor. Moreover, this steel support structure was stored for 3 months from the time it was fabricated until it was delivered to the site, and another month was required for installation at the site. So I think there is only one coat of rust-inhibiting primer in the first place. It’s pretty normal to see rust now, right?
Antirust paint is generally not used alone; it must be used in combination with topcoat paint.
