What are the buffer gases used in dry gas seals?

This post was last edited by ZZJJAA70 on 2009-10-13 08:48. The chiller in our workshop, model 105-J, uses a dry gas seal, and the buffer gases used for this purpose are nitrogen and ammonia. Nitrogen is used during the driving phase; under normal conditions, ammonia from the 105-J three-stage outlet is used.
The dry gas seals in ice machines generally use nitrogen and ammonia as the working gases; ammonia is virtually not consumed, while nitrogen serves as the main buffer gas.
We mainly use ammonia here; nitrogen is only used during the startup phase when it’s not yet ready.
This is part of the standard operating procedures. At the beginning of operation, when there is no gas with an appropriate pressure available as a buffer gas, nitrogen has to be used. Is its properties stable? It can be changed back to another gas once the pressure is increased
