Italy establishes the **Agency for New Technologies, Energy, and Sustainable Economic Development**

On September 14, 2009, the Italian Minister of Economic Development announced that, in accordance with Law No. 99 of July 2009, which aims to promote the development and internationalization of enterprises, including in the energy sector, the Italian Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development was officially established on the basis of the former National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment (ENEA). ENEA continued to be used as the abbreviation for this new agency, and Mr. Giovanni Lelli was appointed as the new commissioner of ENEA. To address the financial crisis and enhance corporate competitiveness, Italy issued Law No. 99 in July 2009 to promote the development and internationalization of enterprises in the energy sector. This law introduced a range of measures aimed at simplifying administrative procedures, improving energy efficiency, saving energy, and fostering research, development, and innovation in the energy field. It included specific provisions for the establishment of the Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), and defined by law the functions of this new agency. The establishment of the new ENEA will undoubtedly play a positive role in coordinating and integrating research and development in the fields of energy and environment in Italy, as well as in fostering enterprise development and the integration of industry, academia, and research.
