If liquid ammonia spherical tanks stored at reduced temperatures need to be loaded onto vehicles, I wonder what methods various manufacturers use? Compressors versus pumps: what are their respective advantages and disadvantages? The problem I’m facing is that since loading the material is a intermittent process, using a centrifugal pump may lead to cavitation, which makes it difficult to start the pump! If a compressor is used, since the design pressure of the spherical tank is low while that of the tank truck is high, it is not possible to directly pump air from the tank truck into the spherical tank; in such cases, it is necessary to consider adding a buffer tank. The use of a buffer tank allows one tank truck to be filled at a time, but if ten tank trucks arrive simultaneously, the air volume supplied by the compressor will not be sufficient to fill them all at once. I earnestly ask experienced experts to share their knowledge!
For loading, it’s much better to use a pump!
It is better to use a centrifugal pump. 1. Its pressure remains relatively stable, with no risk of overpressure. 2. It has good adaptability. 3. It is simple and convenient to use. Of course, considering the properties of liquid ammonia, it is necessary to equip the centrifugal pump with an automatic backflow control system for the minimum flow rate (which can be operated pneumatically on-site), thereby eliminating the need to worry about cavitation
A centrifugal pump is used, with an automatic backflow valve installed at the pump outlet; when the amount of fluid to be pumped is low, the backflow volume increases automatically to ensure a minimum flow rate for the pump. Additionally, the gaseous ammonia inside the tank truck returns to the gas phase space at the top of the spherical tank through gas phase pipes.
It is better to use a compressor. 1. It runs quite stably ; 2. The gaseous ammonia in the tank truck can be pressurized into the storage tank to ensure complete unloading ; 3. There is less leakage.
