I’ve studied chemical engineering for so many years, yet I still haven’t really understood what engineering is and what process engineering entails Is it really necessary to make such a clear distinction between whether design is more oriented toward engineering or toward craftsmanship?

I’ve also been thinking about this issue for the past few years; my field of study is chemical engineering and technology, which I believe is how it’s called in many schools. What is engineering and what is technology? Looking back, during school we learned about them without any clear distinction between the two. It was only after graduation that I understood the difference between engineering and technology. In my personal understanding of their relationship, engineering is about bringing manufacturing processes to industrial scale. When it comes to design, there are process design and engineering design.

My undergraduate major was also Chemical Engineering and Technology, but it seems that some schools offer a major called Chemical Process Engineering. What is the difference between chemical engineering and process chemistry?
My personal understanding is that craftsmanship focuses on theoretical design, while engineering focuses on practical application. Process design primarily takes into account the reaction methods, the selection of pipelines, the choice of various valves, and so on. Once the process design is completed, turning it into reality becomes an engineering challenge; not only the process itself needs to be considered, but also various other aspects such as civil engineering, instrumentation, water supply and drainage systems, utility services, and fire protection. However, within the entire project, the process plays a dominant role.

As I understand it, process engineering involves things such as the design of production processes, the determination of process parameters, and the volume requirements for production equipment. Fields like organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry in academic studies focus more on the theoretical aspects of processes! Engineering: Translating process requirements into engineering practices, with an emphasis on equipment; courses include Principles of Chemical Engineering, Reaction Engineering, Separation Engineering, etc.!
The teacher also said that those studying engineering must learn process technology. It is said that engineering covers a broader range of topics, while process technology focuses on more specialized areas. Actually, I think it’s as if nothing was said at all
4# wgfjcy: The bachelor’s degree is classified under the undergraduate major of Chemical Engineering and Technology, commonly referred to as chemical process engineering; the master’s degree is classified by discipline as Chemical Process Engineering, which is a secondary discipline within the field of chemical engineering.
My major is also Chemical Engineering and Technology; engineering and technology are closely related, so I agree with the fifth floor
Engineering is universal, while processes are specific.
