I had no prior experience in engineering; I’ve just joined a newly established company and want to get involved in engineering work. We are now at the stage of reviewing the process design package. I’m not sure what tasks have been carried out so far; I would appreciate guidance from the experts
Before an engineering project produces a process design package, the main preliminary tasks include: ● Project proposal; Preparation of the feasibility report. ● Project quotation ; Preparation of tender documents and technical documents. ● Introduction of projects: includes solicitation of quotations, evaluation of bids, and negotiation of technical annexes to contracts. ● Overall planning and design for large and medium-sized integrated plants. I’m not sure whether the original poster is from the construction company or the engineering firm, as the responsibilities of each in this regard are different. Generally, the process design should be prepared based on the following information, resulting in a process design package: ● Project proposal ● Feasibility study report ● Plant layout diagrams ● Patent and proprietary technology documents ● Process design and basic design data ● Commencement report ● Meeting-related documents ● Contract documents. It is necessary to analyze this information and determine the design foundations: ● Process route ● Product specifications ● Design scale ● Annual operating hours ● Operating flexibility ● Specifications for raw materials and catalysts ● Specifications for products and by-products ● Specifications for utility systems ● Boundary conditions. Subsequently, the process design is carried out: ● Determination of the process flow scheme ● Process calculations: materials, energy, equipment ● PFD ● Equipment list ● Process equipment data sheet ● Suggested layout diagrams ● Consumption of raw materials and utilities ● Determination of the utility system scheme (UFD) ● Emissions of waste gases, liquids, and solids and suggested treatment methods ● Safety analysis, classification of hazardous areas ● Preliminary PID version (Version A). Relevant design conditions are established: ● Automation conditions: process control, interlocks, alarms ● Electrical conditions: classification of hazardous areas, special electrical requirements, electrical systems, interlocks, alarms ● General layout conditions: suggested layout diagrams ● Equipment conditions: process equipment data sheet ● Analysis and testing conditions: sampling condition table, summary table of sampling points ● Piping conditions: operating principles, safety procedure guidelines ● List of waste emissions ● Utility system condition table ● Fire protection conditions ● Telecommunications conditions ● Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning conditions ● Characteristics of buildings and structures ● Safe production and occupational health ● Physical property data ● Written descriptions. Let’s talk about the instrumentation field. The process package phase involves marking the instrument tag numbers on the preliminary PID.
It’s more or less the same as the content specified in the petrochemical plant process design package (comprehensive technical and process package)
Before designing the process package, it is first necessary to submit a quotation request to the patent technology provider. The requirements specified in this quotation request include: plant scale requirements, specifications for utility systems, raw material specifications, product specifications, key operational interfaces, and main tasks to be carried out. The patent technology provider will then prepare an initial quotation based on similar projects from the past. After receiving the documents, the owner initiates technical negotiations; technical exchanges can be carried out first (regarding process flows, key equipment, catalysts, etc.). During these technical negotiations, the owner outlines the requirements regarding the product, equipment, catalysts, as well as safety and environmental protection aspects. The design institute, on its part, focuses on the technical details, after which a technical annex is signed.
