How can the thickening capacity of synthetic thickeners be improved?

I am currently producing emulsion-type thickeners using normal high-temperature emulsion polymerization (EP), but the thickeners I produce do not have sufficient thickening capacity. Is there any way to increase their thickening effect?
Increase the molecular weight, or add more functional groups
By extending the reaction time, in the synthesis of macromolecules, it is difficult to detect the remaining last group of atoms; therefore, the reaction time needs to be increased, otherwise the molecular weight cannot be increased significantly
