Let’s take coal-to-methanol production as an example: in the process of synthesizing methanol, a large amount of hydrogen is required, and part of the carbon monoxide needs to be converted into carbon dioxide. During methanol synthesis, carbon dioxide consumes a lot of hydrogen, resulting in a low concentration of methanol; therefore, it needs to be removed and discharged. Hydrogen sulfide can poison catalysts during methanol synthesis and produce thioalcohols, which cause corrosion of pipelines, so it also needs to be removed and discharged. The mixture also contains small amounts of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, etc
No acidic gases are released after the transformation; only the low-temperature methanol washing unit is used for the removal of acidic gases. If the sulfur recovery unit cannot operate due to low load, the gases have to be vented through the flare
It is mainly CO2 that vaporizes in the flashing section; however, when the flashing pressure is not optimal and there is an excess of nitrogen being stripped off, large amounts of methanol or CO/H2 may be carried away, which has a significant impact on the absorption tower downstream
