I would like to ask what effects thinning a pipe generally has on it If it’s severe, do I need to replace the pipes?
For severely worn pipes, a thickness gauge can be used to determine when replacement is necessary; based on my experience, this is when the wall thickness reaches 2/3 of its original value
If the design approval is granted and a formal change order is issued, the pipe wall thickness can be reduced; this has no impact on safety, but it will affect the service life of the pipe. If it is a fixed-price contract, the corresponding amount for the work involved should also be deducted.
Pipe design first requires calculating the diameter and wall thickness of the pipe. Due to stress and medium corrosion, the pipe gradually thins over time as its service life progresses; the standard design lifespan for a pipe is 20 years. Leaks in certain sections of the pipes may occur before the end of their service life due to various reasons such as improper welding techniques or negative pipe tolerances. It is recommended to consider a partial replacement at this time. If it has been in use for a long time, a complete replacement can be considered depending on whether the medium is hazardous.
The design service life of normal pipelines is 8 to 15 years
