What are the typical carbon contents of the coarse and fine residues in the Texaco process? What is an appropriate limit?
Generally, coarse slag contains 5% carbon, while fine slag contains 20% carbon
This is closely related to the load and the quality of the coal slurry; for us, it’s 10–20% for coarse slag and around 30% for fine slag
Controlling the carbon content in the gasification slag is an important indicator for assessing the operating costs of water-coal slurry pressurized gasification systems. If a high carbon conversion rate is pursued, it will inevitably affect the service life of the furnace bricks. When the temperature in the gasification furnace exceeds a certain threshold, the viscosity of the slag in the reaction chamber decreases, and the thickness of the slag layer on the inner walls of the reaction chamber and at the slag outlet decreases as well. Changes in the pressure drop at the slag outlet directly affect the yield of syngas. The low viscosity of the slag allows it to seep into the bricks on the fire-facing side; as a result, operation at high temperatures for extended periods reduces the service life of the refractory bricks. When the carbon conversion rate is low, increasing the oxygen/carbon ratio in the gasifier helps to reduce carbon and increase carbon monoxide; this represents a point of diminishing returns. To balance the increase in carbon monoxide resulting from increased carbon conversion with the conversion of carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, (this is sometimes referred to as over-burning). For slag with a carbon content, a range of 5–10 is appropriate; for fine slag, a range of 10–20 is more suitable.
