Non-halogen flame retardants – expanded graphite

Japanese company Suzu Chemical, in collaboration with Toshiba, has developed and launched a new type of non-halogen flame retardant – expanded graphite (GREP-EG). EGEP—EG is a structure consisting of flake-like layered graphite, and it possesses quite good flame-retardant properties because the acids between its layers release gas when heated, thereby forming a non-combustible layer. The main features of its products are: (1) it contains no halogenated chemicals ； (2) A flame-retardant solid phase can be formed after thermal expansion ； (3) Low smoke production ； (4) Insoluble in water and solvents, free of heavy metals ； (5) The onset temperature of expansion is in the range of 130°C to 300°C (varies by grade). It is most suitable for use in building materials such as fire-resistant coatings, fire-resistant rubber seals, and fire-resistant finishing materials.
