The factory uses activated carbon to decolorize solutions, and a large amount of it is required. Considering cost efficiency, they want to reuse the activated carbon by recovering it. I heard that soaking used activated carbon in concentrated sulfuric acid and then rinsing the activated carbon with water can achieve its recovery. What is the specific process? Are there any other recycling methods?
Activated carbon is generally recovered by heating it with hot air; the activated carbon obtained in this way can usually only be used for lower-grade applications. Activated carbon regeneration equipment is divided into two types: powder carbon regeneration and granular carbon regeneration. The principle in both cases is to control the oxygen level at high temperatures in order to oxidize the substances adsorbed by the activated carbon into carbon dioxide, without causing damage to the activated carbon itself. After that, it is activated by superheated steam at nearly 1000 degrees Celsius; once cooled, the regenerated activated carbon is obtained. The loss rate due to burning during activated carbon regeneration in foreign equipment is around 5%. Specialized equipment must be used, and the activity of the regenerated activated carbon is almost identical to that of new activated carbon. However, it is best not to mix activated carbons that have absorbed different substances for regeneration – each type of activated carbon should be regenerated to retain the ability to absorb the same substances it originally absorbed. In this way, no waste activated carbon is produced, and the only substance emitted is carbon dioxide.
