In pipeline construction, pipe supports are often overlooked; problems frequently arise during later operations due to improper design or installation of these supports. Below are the differences between three important types of supports used for pipes: Fixed support: It does not allow any displacement or angular movement along all three axes at the support point. Limiting frame: The function of the limiting frame is to restrict linear displacement. On the restricted axis, at least one direction is restricted. Guide frame: A support that allows the pipeline to move only in the axial direction, preventing rotation caused by bending moments or torque. Piping supports and hangers serve three functions: First, they bear the weight loads of the pipes (including their own weight and the weight of the fluid contained within them) ; Second, it serves as a limit mechanism to prevent the pipe from moving in unintended directions ; Third, control vibration, which is used to control swinging, vibration, or shocks. The fixture restricts linear displacement in three directions and angular displacement in three directions ; The guide frame limits linear displacement in two directions ; The support bracket (or one-way thrust bracket) limits linear displacement in one direction.
We work in power plants, and many pipes require stress calculations. If the pipe supports and hangers are not installed properly, stress cannot be transferred. Generally, we will provide a detailed list of supports and hangers. Including load, location, elevation, material, and so on. But no detailed drawings are provided for small pipes. Open the material and mark the spacing between the brackets. I don’t know how other industries do it. Many of the majors in our college have certain drawing conventions from the Mechanical Department. The positions of the brackets are generally not indicated. Here are a few schematic diagrams for the installation of supports and hangers. However, these are usually low-pressure pipes.
A project that was just completed involves many issues with pipe supports: 1. Excessive reliance on stress calculations, resulting in insufficient support for the pipes. 2. The fixing brackets are not secure, and the pipe water hammer brackets have been damaged. 3. The support type is not properly selected, resulting in significant pipe vibration. It seems that the bracket issue is a problem that cannot be ignored.
