We are using the activated MDEA method, and it works fairly well; however, it’s not possible to raise the pressure in the medium-pressure flash tower to the designed level of 0.7 MPa. Once the pressure is increased, the system tends to bubble, and we haven’t been able to find a good solution yet. I’m reaching out to all of you here for help.
The modified amine process (MDEA) decarburization system must undergo degreasing and rust removal before operation, with the aim of removing oils, scale, rust, and other substances that can cause foaming in the solution. Long-term production experience shows that carefully maintaining the decarburization solution system clean is not only good practice, but it is also a necessary factor for minimizing solution foaming and accelerating the initial startup process; therefore, it is best to carry out thorough cleaning before starting up. After completing the aforementioned cleaning process, the MDEA solution can be prepared. In small batches, it is prepared in solution tanks using deionized water, along with sufficient amounts of MDEA and activator, to yield a solution in which MDEA constitutes 50% (wt) and the activator constitutes 6% (wt). Add the defoamer; it is best to carry out this task when most of the equipment in the system has been cleaned through purging. This device does not have a dedicated tank for adding defoamers; instead, the defoamer is added to the underground solution tank. Thus, after mechanical cleaning of the underground solution tank, some 3% (wt) NaOH solution can be poured in, and a small amount of direct steam is carefully introduced to bring it to a boil. After this work is completed, it should be flushed with deionized water and finally wiped clean with a cloth before it can be used. MDEA solutions do not tend to form bubbles easily; generally, when oils, solid particles, etc. enter the system and cause bubbling, an antifoaming agent (NC-antifoaming agent) needs to be added, at a rate of 1-3 Kg per use. Both the activator and the defoamer are products of Nanhua Company.
