It seems that protective paint is being applied here. I remember there was a GB coating specification that dealt specifically with terminology; the original poster might want to look for it.

It seems like you’re being too pedantic; the meaning is already quite clear. In an English translation, sticking strictly to the literal words is completely wrong. Painting something means applying a coating to it. Of course, you can also choose not to paint it, and instead use gold plating or other types of coatings
I suggest that the original poster take another look at the surrounding text; this compound may provide you with various options – some surfaces don’t necessarily require painting, while others need to be oiled instead.
