Our company has a gear oil pump used to transport diesel at room temperature. The diesel is stored in underground tanks, while the gear pump is located above ground; there is a height difference of 2 meters between the two. Is it possible for the pump to run idly in order to draw the oil up?
A gear oil pump is used to transport diesel at normal temperature; the diesel is stored in underground tanks, while the gear pump is located above ground. The height difference between the two is 2 meters, so there should be no problems. However, careful attention must be paid to the selection of the pump. The key to the proper installation of the gear pump lies in determining the correct installation height for it. This height refers to the vertical distance from the liquid surface to the centerline of the gear oil pump impeller; it should not be confused with the allowable suction vacuum level. The allowable suction vacuum level indicated on the nameplate or product manual refers to the vacuum value at the pump’s inlet section. Given the low viscosity of diesel, it is even more important to leave an appropriate margin.
