The unit has been shut down. According to the company’s regulations, the auxiliary oil pump of the blower turbine must be started twice a week to operate the oil system. Today, after an operator started and stopped the auxiliary oil pump, he noticed oil leakage from the fan bearings. So he came to me and told me that there was a problem with the bearing’s oil seal – it was leaking oil! I just told him that the oil seal only functions once the shaft starts rotating, so there will be some oil leakage when it stops. He asked me again why there was no oil leakage before starting I told him that before the auxiliary oil pump started, the oil level in the bearing chamber was low, below the height of the rotating shaft, so there was no leakage. When the auxiliary oil pump started and then stopped again, the oil level in the bearing chamber rose above the height of the rotating shaft, and that’s when oil began to leak out. I work in the field of manufacturing processes, and I’m not sure if my explanation is correct. I would appreciate it if those here could give me some advice. Thank you!
It is mainly related to the size of the oil return hole, and it is also closely connected to the viscosity of the oil. This phenomenon usually occurs in winter when temperatures are low; generally, it doesn’t have much impact in other situations. If you are still worried, please check the return oil port and seals.
