We are using membrane filtration systems, with two stages of filtration: coarse filtration and fine filtration. When the magnesium ion level is high, it is necessary to use salts with low magnesium content. I’m not sure what the process used for removing sulfate ions was previously; if it involved a clarification tank, then some alkali can be added before the water enters that tank, along with FeCl3, to remove most of the magnesium particles in advance, thereby reducing the load on the membrane filtration system. It’s best to avoid using pumps with high head pressure; for fine filtration, choose pumps with a head pressure of around 15 meters, to prevent magnesium particles from passing through the membrane
