Improving the value of renewable resources: Derivatives of glycerol. Better utilization of renewable resources: New and important derivatives of glycerol. Green Chem., 2008, 10, 13–30. Although glycerol has been a well-known renewable chemical for centuries, its commercial significance has increased significantly in recent years due to its increasing production as a by-product of biodiesel manufacturing. This review provides an overview of the chemistry of glycerol, covering everything from traditional esters and oligomers to newer products such as glycerol carbonate, telomers, branched alkyl ethers, propanediols, and epoxides.
