Initial Spiking is NOT “initial exploration”. Please read this: Initial “Spiking” For samples with concentrations situated between the lower limit of linearity and the detection limit of the electrode, it is necessary to first “spike” the sample with a sufficient amount of the target ion, so that the measurements fall within the linear range. The sample is then analyzed using the standard addition method, and the initial concentration is determined by subtracting the amount added as a spike from the final measurement result. This procedure also helps to reduce the time required to obtain a stable mV reading – as this time usually increases significantly as the sample concentration decreases – but it is only effective in improving the accuracy of measurements for a very limited range of samples, probably only down to about one-tenth of the lower limit of linearity. For example, in the best-case scenario, the overall error in terms of ppm is likely to be at least ±2% RSD (4% at a 95% confidence level!). Therefore, if the lower limit of linearity is 1 ppm and any sample with a concentration lower than this is “spiked” to a concentration of 2 ppm, then the error associated with that spiked sample will be at least ±0.04 ppm. As a result, for any sample with a concentration of less than 0.1 ppm, the error will be greater than ±40% RSD!
