What methods are available to accurately measure the vibration inside the gearbox of a high-speed pump? To obtain better and more accurate information prior to equipment failures, we purchased a set of domestic handheld vibration meters along with their software. However, when selecting the measurement points, this is because the probe is magnetic. It was found that the speed increase gearbox of the high-speed pump was made of aluminum and did not provide any areas for attachment; therefore, two threaded holes with a depth of 6–10 mm were drilled in the gearbox in horizontal and vertical directions, and a custom-made steel measurement probe was installed therein to facilitate data collection. However, during use, it was found that since the measurement points were not located on the bearing housings or the specific areas to be measured, but rather on two points on the cover of the gearbox housing, the accuracy of the data was very low. Affected by various factors, such data could not provide users with accurate information regarding the equipment’s operation and wear condition. Could someone please help me solve this?

The measurement of gearbox vibration is always carried out on the housing; it is not possible to perform it on the internal bearing seats. Just get as close as possible to the bearing area. Using screws for connection is much better than using magnets. The desired vibration frequency should be visible. I don’t know which model of vibration measuring instrument you are using.
We have also encountered the issue raised by the poster; previously we purchased an Imet vibration meter, but it was not possible to conduct measurements due to the aluminum casing of the Sundyne high-speed pump. Our solution was simple: the company bought another vibration meter, a Japanese Rion VM-63A, and all the problems were solved!
