In a set of coking gasoline and diesel hydrorefining units, the recycle hydrogen compressor is of the reciprocating type, and the cooling water used is demineralized water. After half a year of operation, it was found that the cooling water was very dirty, containing a lot of sludge and having a dark yellow color. The filters for the packing cooling water would get clogged frequently; although replacing the water helped improve the situation to some extent, there was still a considerable amount of yellow sludge adhering to the inside of the pipes. This problem did not occur in the water treatment station for the new hydrogen compressors. It’s unclear how this yellow sludge comes about

On the surface, it is due to corrosion in your circulating water system; the yellow-brown color is caused by iron ions. The solution is to thoroughly clean your water system, followed by acid treatment and passivation to create a protective layer on it. Additionally, disinfectants and corrosion inhibitors should be added regularly during normal operation – these are the chemicals necessary for the proper functioning of a closed-loop water system.
