I have another question for everyone: I want to push toluene into the tank – can air be used for this purpose?
Air cannot be used as a power source to transport flammable liquids; inert gases or pumps can be used for transportation.
It cannot be pushed by air pressure! Hazardous properties of toluene according to the MSDS: It is flammable; its vapors can form explosive mixtures with air, and it can catch fire and explode in the presence of open flames or high temperatures. It can react violently with oxidizers. Too high a flow rate can easily generate and accumulate static electricity. Its vapor is heavier than air, allowing it to spread over considerable distances at lower levels; it will catch fire and reignite when exposed to a source of flame. Static electricity is generated in toluene during the pumping process, and since air is used for pumping as well, toluene being a flammable substance, all three elements necessary for combustion are present. One can follow the suggestions mentioned above and use an inert gas for pumping, making sure to control the flow rate and properly install static grounding devices.
Toluene is a flammable and explosive substance; it must not be pumped using compressed air, but rather with a magnetic pump, and the motor used for pumping must also be explosion-proof.
Transport it using high-purity nitrogen; compressed air is absolutely not allowed
Use nitrogen pressure for delivery; that is, even when using a pump, nitrogen is still needed for protection. Otherwise, static electricity may be generated during the transfer process, which could cause a fire.
My opinion is that “if using a pump for transfer, nitrogen protection is also needed” – not necessarily! “Otherwise, static electricity may be generated during the transfer process, which could cause a fire – but not necessarily! Our company uses pressure pumps to transport toluene, and static electricity is bound to be generated during the transfer process (regardless of the material of the pipes); it is essential to ensure proper grounding in order to dissipate static electricity promptly!
