Regarding the choice between shielded pumps and magnetic drive pumps, the medium to be transported is methanol. Could you please advise which type of pump would be better? Additionally, could you let me know the advantages and disadvantages of shielded pumps and magnetic drive pumps? Thank you in advance.
Shielded pumps: They offer a wide range of power options (from 5 to 160 kilowatts), which means that the flow rate and head capacity can also vary over a broad range. Shielded pumps have higher requirements for the particles present in the medium; there must be no hard particles.
What they have in common is that both shielded pumps and magnetic drive pumps are leak-free pumps. The difference is that in a canned pump, both the pump and the drive motor are enclosed within a container filled with the medium to be pumped. The overall structure and appearance of the magnetic pump are similar to those of a mechanical seal pump; it has a separate motor for drive, which is connected to the pump body via a coupling. Since it is a leak-free pump, it is driven by the magnetic force between inner and outer magnets. Magnetic pump has an issue with magnetic conversion, which may result in low efficiency. But as manufacturing technology matures, I don’t think power and efficiency are major issues; the choice of pump should be based on considerations such as budget, safety, and maintenance costs. The safety of magnetic pumps and shielded pumps can be said to be without any issues, as they are inherently leak-free pumps. From the perspective of equipment investment, the price of shielded pumps is higher than that of magnetic pumps. From a maintenance perspective, shielded pumps essentially require few maintenance efforts; their performance depends mainly on the quality of manufacturing. If a failure occurs, the repair costs can be quite high. Magnetic pump alignment and vibration can be checked regularly, and its maintenance costs are relatively low as well.
