For a hermetically sealed internal-pressure vessel with upper and lower end caps, is it calculated that the thickness of the end caps should be less than that of the vessel wall?
It depends on what kind of end cap you have. If it is an elliptical head, according to the formula, it should be slightly thinner than the cylinder.
That’s not necessarily the case; it depends on the type of head. Hemispherical heads are thinner. The thickness of the elliptical head is generally taken to be the same as that of the cylinder.

Not necessarily; it depends on whether an end cap is used. I just designed a piece of equipment for which the calculated wall thickness was 55.6 mm. An elliptical end cap would require a thickness of 55.3 mm, while a hemispherical end cap would need only about 28 mm. There’s also the issue of hydrostatic pressure due to the liquid column mentioned above; in containers that are relatively tall and where the pressure tends to be at atmospheric levels, the end caps may need to be thicker
The conventional practice is to make the head thickness (referring to the elliptical head) the same as that of the cylinder wall, or slightly thicker than the cylinder wall.
