Alkylation with sulfuric acid requires that there be no elemental sulfur in it; I want to know how to determine whether elemental sulfur is present in sulfuric acid.
There is definitely no elemental sulfur in concentrated sulfuric acid, because sulfur in it is in the +6 oxidation state and possesses strong oxidizing properties. Elemental S has a valence of 0 and is reducible. When concentrated sulfuric acid is present together with elemental sulfur, a redox reaction occurs, producing sulfur dioxide and water. Reaction equation: S + 2H2SO4 → 3SO2 + 2H2O
