What is the effectiveness of urea as a de-icing agent? What impacts will it have on the environment?
As far as I know, urea is not used alone as a de-icing agent. I am aware of a new type of de-icing agent that is in powder form; it consists of a mixture of CaCl₂·2H₂O, CaCl₂, urea, sodium nitrite, and potassium sulfate. It mainly involves utilizing the properties of certain inorganic salts, mixing them together and re-granulating them to create a powdered de-icing agent. A conventional de-icing agent is a mixture that uses calcium chloride dihydrate as the main ingredient (90% or more), along with urea, sodium nitrite, and potassium sulfate as auxiliary ingredients. A high-quality de-icing agent is made from anhydrous calcium chloride as the main ingredient (over 90%) along with urea, sodium nitrite, and potassium sulfate as auxiliary ingredients; it overcomes the drawbacks of traditional de-icing methods and the materials used in them, such as environmental pollution, damage to crops and plants along roadsides, as well as corrosion of the steel structures in bridges.
What a surprise, haha – urea can also be used as an ice melt!
Take a look at the area surrounding the urea granulation tower, and also consider the impact of urea dust on the paint coatings of vehicles in that area. The extent to which urea affects urban roads and related facilities may be much greater than what some people realize. So, everyone should consider using urea as a de-icing agent with caution.
Using urea as a de-icing agent does more harm than good.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using urea as a de-icing agent? What about using industrial salt? Which is better and which is worse?
They only used a very small amount of urea, so it should have little impact. However, N among them can have an impact on water bodies.
What a surprise, haha – urea can also be used as an ice melt!
I only know that calcium chloride and sodium chloride are used as de-icing agents; I guess the cost of urea must be too high as well
When studying this, industrial salt is the best choice for de-icing agents!
