Local friction occurs at the bends of pipes and at the valves within them; this is related to the number of fittings that cause local losses, their friction coefficients, and the flow velocity of the fluid.

When fluid flows along a pipe, the resistance resulting from friction between layers of the fluid and between the fluid and the pipe walls is known as frictional resistance. The pressure drop caused by this is referred to as pipe friction loss. It depends on the friction coefficient, the total length of the pipe, the inner diameter of the pipe, the weight flow rate of the fluid, and the density of the fluid.

Pipe frictional loss refers to the pressure loss that occurs during the transportation of oil and gas due to factors such as friction; it can also be called pressure drop loss. Frictional losses in pipelines are most common in long-distance pipelines. Frictional losses include those caused by various valves, flow meters, bypasses, etc., on the pipeline, as well as those incurred by the pipeline itself.
