The axial force of a multi-stage centrifugal pump is generally very large, and it cannot be absolutely balanced by bearings alone. Therefore, there is a balance drum or balance plate in the multi-stage pump. Its function is to introduce the low-pressure medium on the inlet side through the balance pipe. The pressure difference on both sides of the balance drum balances most of the axial force (generally about 75% can be balanced). The other axial force is borne by the thrust bearing.
