In distillation operations, is the reboiler installed vertically or horizontally? Will it affect the operation?
It depends on the physical properties of the recomponents – factors such as whether they crystallize easily, their tendency to form structures, and their corrosiveness need to be taken into account. Generally, the difference between vertical and horizontal configurations in terms of operational impact is minimal, provided that the layout is proper!
Tube columns are generally used in a vertical configuration; vertical types should be avoided for applications with suspended solids or a high tendency to scale; In a horizontal configuration, uneven heat exchange can occur at low flow rates; materials with suspended solids or a tendency to form scale can lead to deposition at the bottom or accelerated scaling.
It depends on your choice of field of study. Vertical reboilers are generally “thermosiphonic” reboilers, and such reboilers require to be installed vertically. The kettle-type reboiler, on the other hand, needs to be installed horizontally.
