Our hydrogenation unit’s high-pressure heat exchangers have been experiencing leaks frequently recently; we’re not sure what’s causing this.

If there is a leak at the flange, it is likely due to large temperature fluctuations.
Most leaks in the high-pressure heat exchangers of hydrogenation units are caused by floating-head seal failures, primarily resulting from production fluctuations as well as rapid temperature increases or reductions. It is necessary to control the temperature difference between the inlet streams on the tube side and shell side of the high-pressure heat exchanger; this difference should not be too large, as otherwise uneven thermal expansion and contraction at the seals of the high-pressure heat exchanger can lead to seal leakage. The temperature is increased at a rate of generally 25°/h.
The main leakage issue we encounter is leakage at the head, caused primarily by large temperature fluctuations. Primarily during shutdown periods, it prevents excessive oil flow and rapid changes in temperature differences. It should be fine to pay attention to this during normal production; as for other issues, it would be due to problems with your equipment.
