I plan to install a sand filter tower in the diesel refining unit in order to improve the quality of the diesel product. I was wondering if any of you who are in this industry have used such a system? How effective is it? Thank you!

It turns out that gasoline desulfurization units generally have sand filter towers before the buffer tanks at the inlet and outlet of the unit; these towers contain ceramic ball fillers, but they don’t serve a significant purpose. Nowadays we use bypass lines, so sand filter towers are practically useless.
We used sand filtration units for diesel refining, followed by water washing. After diesel is refined, it is sent to a sand filter tower; due to the high amount of gum in diesel, sticky precipitates often form on the ceramic balls, rendering them ineffective and preventing proper filtration. Generally, the effect is good at the beginning of operation, but it loses its effectiveness over time, while the pressure drop increases.
Sand filter towers lose their effectiveness over time; they have a high baking loss rate, so their use is not recommended.
I have also used diesel sand filters in my facility; at first they were very effective, but over time they lost their sand-filtering capability. My facility now uses two sand filters, one in use and one as a backup. When their performance isn’t satisfactory, we clean them with steam and water, and then their performance improves again. You might want to give it a try.

Before diesel and gasoline leave the plant, sand filter towers are generally installed. As for their effectiveness, it varies – sometimes it’s noticeable and other times not; the reason for this might be what the people above mentioned, namely changes in the surface of the ceramic balls and fillers during operation. My question is whether these factors are also related to the design of the sand filter tower, such as the flow rate in an empty tower and the specifications of the packing. I’m also wondering if it’s possible to design such a system for backwashing. There is very little information available on this topic; generally, designs are based on empirical experience. Could someone discuss this issue in more detail? The poster wants to address the issue of alkali in diesel; I think solutions should first be sought in the upstream processing steps, such as adjusting the operating temperature and using methods to suppress emulsification. Sand filter towers can only serve as measures to ensure process stability, not as actual process equipment. Moreover, wasn’t a coalescer used to solve this problem?
