The boiler specialty mainly focuses on boilers and their auxiliary systems. It leans more towards the combustion system (air, fuel, and coal powder systems), as well as systems for waste discharge, feeding, ignition, and water supply – these are also considered part of the boiler specialty (that’s how our institute classifies them). The steam turbine field focuses on steam systems as well as the piping systems for auxiliary equipment related to steam turbines. There are many pressure pipelines. Stress calculation is required, with a slightly higher relative content. (Purely personal opinion) In power plants, the two specialties complement each other; they each have their own advantages and are inseparable. I used to work in the field of stove and furnace design. There should be an opportunity to work on turbine design soon. In our institution, there are only differences in division of labor, not in specialties. Both boilers and steam turbines can be operated by a single person. If possible, it is advisable to carry out designs for both specialties, so as to gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire process system of the power plant. I’ve always felt that I haven’t really done it; my understanding is one-sided and incomplete. If I had to choose just one, I would recommend choosing the boiler. It should cover a wider range of aspects and be easier to get started with! I’m talking about the professional introduction of the design institute. If the original poster asks about the design of the boiler and turbine themselves, I’m not very familiar with that. I think the major domestic boiler and turbine manufacturers are all quite good. There may be more aspects to the design of boilers, while steam turbines are generally standard. I looked at a few projects, and the drawings are still very old with no changes.

To work on turbines, it’s best to go to a turbine company!
