When the speed of a centrifugal pump changes, its flow rate, head, and shaft power all change accordingly. If the pump’s speed increases by 20%, then the pump’s flow rate also increases by 20%, while the pump’s head increases by 44%, which is equal to 1.2 squared ； The shaft power of the pump is then 1.2 to the power of 3, an increase of 72.8%.
The speed of the pump is related to both flow rate and head; this becomes evident when variable frequency control is used. With a low rotation speed, the head generally won’t be high.
