As the title suggests, I’m wondering whether it’s possible to use an internal floating roof – especially considering the high level of impurities in crude benzene. If a fixed roof combined with a nitrogen seal is used, the saturated vapor pressure of benzene is quite high; therefore, the maximum allowable internal pressure for storage tanks is 6 KPa, whereas benzene typically requires a nitrogen seal pressure of 13 KPa. This means that a low-pressure storage tank would be necessary, but there are no existing standards for this. I earnestly request advice from those with experience in this area. Thank you!
There are two points to consider: first, benzene is highly toxic; second, its vapor pressure at 10 degrees Celsius is around 6 KPa. Therefore, vertical cylindrical welded steel tanks can be considered, as long as they are properly sealed.
It is better to use it as a low-pressure storage tank. Spherical tanks can be made, and of course vertical cylindrical welded steel structures are also an option. A breathing valve can be installed for nitrogen sealing, and a condenser should be placed after the exhaust pipe to use chilled water for condensation.

For this type, there are generally no issues with using atmospheric-pressure tanks; the most common design is a vertical cylindrical tank equipped with a nitrogen sealing system to maintain the pressure inside the tank at 40–90 mmH2O. Since the boiling point of BZ is relatively low, the tank needs to be insulated. An internal floating roof will do; although it is bulky, it won’t affect the lifting and lowering of the floating disk.
