Is 16Mn a suitable choice for the manhole segment? What material should be chosen for manhole flanges?
For 16MnDR grade 3 pipes, 16Mn grade 3 forgings are used for the manhole flanges
The manhole cylinder section is made of 16MnR, while the manhole flange is made from 16Mn grade III forgings.
Liquid chlorine can be stored at room temperature. The critical temperature of liquid chlorine is 114°C. In the absence of cooling facilities, the operating pressure is taken to be the saturated vapor pressure at 50°C, which is 1.414 MPa. If the volume is greater than 707 m3, it can be classified as Category III; otherwise, it is classified as Category II. So 16MnR material can be used; in my opinion, too high-grade materials are not necessary for forgings either. If cooling is provided, the operating pressure will be lower.
As long as the strength is sufficient, there’s no problem with it. Make sure that the plates are subjected to ultrasonic testing, and that forgings meet grade 3 or higher standards. If the connections require additional reinforcement, forgings should be used instead of plates.
