What temperature can PTFE gaskets withstand?
Operating temperature range for pure PTFE gaskets: -196~200 (°C)
Temperature range: -200°C to +280°C℃
Generally, PTFE is not recommended for use in environments above 150°C. RTFE (with glass fiber added) can withstand temperatures of around 200°C; in environments above 200°C, packing or gaskets containing PTFE should not be used.
This can be carried out in accordance with relevant standards; the temperature range recommended by the standards should be reliable!
If my operating temperature is 150 degrees Celsius, can I use PTFE gaskets?
150 should work; if not, use a metal one instead!
In accordance with the new industry standard – HG20592B, page 360: PTFE has a operating temperature range of -50~100°C, while modified ePTFE and RPTFE have an operating temperature range of -200~200°C
The standard is one thing, and the product you buy is another. If it exceeds 120 degrees, it is recommended to use imported gaskets. We have used an environment of 200 degrees, which is a highly acidic chlorinated environment; imported gaskets worked without any problems. Also, if domestic PTFE gaskets are used, it is best to conduct tests, as many of them are of rather poor quality
In my opinion: respect the design requirements, but also take practical considerations into account. I experienced an accident firsthand: the operating temperature was between 0 and 100 degrees, but due to issues with system operation, the temperature rose suddenly, causing the gaskets to melt and gas to leak.
